ok guys, i'm going to join you in the year 2001 and buy a DVD player. I really don't know what i want cause well...i'm a boon.
Anyway, my first thoughts were to get a combo dvd/vcr but i noticed the options on the dvd player weren't that good for this type of combo.

I'd like to be able to "sample" movies from the internet and "view" them on my new dvd player, but i'm not sure what options i need for this...for example dvd/cd-r/cd-rw/vcd etc...
And no a DVD recorder is way out of the budget.

if you want to download movies and burn them to plain cds, make sure your dvd player supports vcd and possibly svcd. They have an Apex dvd player at Wal-Mart for about 50 bucks that I have heard alot of good reports about. Also, you could get a Lite-On dvd burner from NewEgg for around 120 bucks. If you went with that and the Apex you are under 200 bucks. =)

I recently purchased a new DVD player. Do NOT get the combo machines. The DVD/VCR things usually suck (or all the ones I have seen did). This is the one I got (http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL026942) I got it from Sears for $99 (listed at $270). You best bet...go to BestBuy.com and find the one you want. Sears does price matching + 10%

Well, there was only 1 left and it was the display model (yeah, I got lucky). It's a 7 disk changer that will play SVCD's, MP3's and JPG Cds...which I thought was sweet.

The other DVD player I had was a JVC also. It was locking up (temp problems) and I tried to fix it, but ended up breaking the power board instead! doh!

Canuck, what kind of TV do u have? If you have a higher end TV, I would recommend buying a progressive scan DVD player. Check out www.crutchfield.com for a good product comparison and reference guide. I would also get at least a 5 disc changer. Don't but a player with built in DTS/Dolby Digital Decoder. It's a waste of money, use your receiver to do the decoding. And BTW, there is no differecne between optical and coaxial digital inputs/outputs so don't pay more for those. I have a Sony 5 disc and I am very pleased with the menu functions and such.

I have a website bookmarked at home that isa GREAT source for determining if S-VCD/VCD/ etc can play on which player. I'll post it after work.

Here I found the site, it tells you what players will play which types of burned media.

Also, if you are planning on getting a new tv soon, it would be a good idea to go ahead and get a didgital tv and a progressive scan dvd player.

Yeah, I agree. Get progressive and any digital output from the DVD player would be great.
