I haven't read this entire article, but a couple of quotes stod out so I thought I would post it here.
Here's the one that stunned me:
"There are more slaves today than were seized from Africa in 400 years of the transatlantic slave trade. The modern commerce in humans rivals illegal drug trafficking in its global reach and in the destruction of lives."
Here's the article (http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0309/feature1/index.html)
