I think you need the AMD 2600 in order to utilize the 333 frontside bus, but I've been wrong before. It sounds pretty awsome either way Ernie, now you can turn off the hax, w00t! You were housin my whole team on train last night.

LA_MERC_MadMAX
February 17th, 2003, 11:09 AM
the 2500 is 333 fsb too - there is both a 266 and a 333 version of the 2400 and the 2600 too - the 266 versions of them actually have a higher clock speed -

I'm about to get a 266fsb 2.0ghz 2400+ to pop on my board in place of the 2000+ there now...w00t!

Sounds Perfect guys beware we will get owned when he gets this in haha. I am not all to sure that you would need the audiology 2 might be alittle over board for wht you may use it for. just thougth i would save you a few bucks? you left out the monitor or are you going to keep the one you have i would sugest at least a 19" :)

LA_MERC_Mercy
February 18th, 2003, 04:36 AM
yeah i left it off and saved $140 and the audigy2 wasnt much extra, and im planing on doing some dv editing, so it will be a good soundcard to have to work with

LA_MERC_MadMAX
February 18th, 2003, 05:14 AM
Yeah - the audigy is a great card - only diff between the audigy and the audigy 2 is 6.1 - the audio processor is the same...and with as much worries mercy has had w/ sound cards in the past, he deserves a good card!

BTW, My 2400+ comes in today...w00t! I'll have to update my 3dMark 2003 score - and mercy, your butt better run it when you get your system set up!!!

LA_MERC_Mercy
February 18th, 2003, 06:23 AM
oh i plan on it...going to run my current systems specs and then the new one...on a related note, i had to change my mobo to a new mobo

so im getting a Leadtek Winfast k7ncr18d-pro ddr333/400 8x agp nForce2 w/usb2.0, lan, Audio, video

this mobo is pretty sweet, it has the equalivant of a geforce4 mx440 video card built on and dolby digital 5.1 sound built in also...it also comes with a 3 firewire ports to boot...oh yeah, they bumped me up to a xp2600 also...and i saved $35 to boot

LA_MERC_MadMAX

the nForce 2 is hands down the best athlon chipset out right now. I do not like the Via 333 or 400 chipsets at all - they tend to be a little flakey and unstable - the last good VIA athlon chipset is the 266A which is the best chipset for up to the 2400...i.e. anything w/a 266 fsb.

Good deal Mercy...although I would have rather had the 2500 over the 2600 for the extra L2 Cache...but the additional clock speed should just about even it out. What is the actual clock speed on the 2600+? My 2400 is an even 2.0GHz.

LA_MERC_Mercy
February 18th, 2003, 01:53 PM
mine is going to be 2.08GHz and i am getting the 333fsb version of the 2600...

hey have you seen anything on the newest amd chip? the xp 3000?

LA_MERC_LaTech
February 18th, 2003, 02:06 PM
I'm gonna wiat to upgrade till AMD releases their newer chips (supposed to be 1st Q of this year...not gonna happen I think) The Opteron.

LaTech

LA_MERC_MadMAX
February 18th, 2003, 02:42 PM
well I had to get a new board too - my board wouldn't see the 2400 as a 2400...lol saw it as a 2000MHz AMD Athlon I got a MSI KT3V and it is w00t!

Well off to play some more....lol

LA_MERC_MadMAX
February 18th, 2003, 02:48 PM
re: 3000+, it's 2.167 GHz and has 512 L2 Cache...actually slower than the 2800+ which runs at 2.25 but has less cache...it's getting quite confusing...lol

LA_MERC_MadMAX
February 18th, 2003, 02:51 PM
Tech, the deal w/ the new chips is that they are 64bit and won't run optimally until we have a 64bit os and a wide base of 64 bit software though...the Athlon XP/P4 chips will still be the best performers for a while...I really think that's why AMD keeps "delaying" them

LA_MERC_Mercy
February 18th, 2003, 03:04 PM
yeah i have seen that mentioned on other boards also max

Nice system, Mercy. Great choice on getting the Nforce2 chipset Mobo over the Soyo, and the Corsair upgrade. I have a new AMD rig Ive been playing around with using the Asus A7N8X Deluxe and a XP1700 Thoroughbred B. The onboard sound on this thing smokes ANYTHING that Creative makes, both in sound quality and performance. Yeah I know, it's hard to believe but it's true. It even has 2 onboard LAN ports! As to the great soundchip, Im not sure if your Mobo has it or not as Im not that familiar with the Leadtek board, but it is a separate APU called Soundstorm I think that is integrated into the Southbridge. You may want to check into that.

LA_MERC_Mercy
February 19th, 2003, 04:47 AM
i did, and this board does have it along with the intergrated graphics chip..

[lag]DikDstrdly
February 19th, 2003, 07:02 AM
about the only time you'll ever need that graphics chip is when and if your Ti 4800 ever dies from all of your headshots! ;-)

I'm curious what a dual lan is needed for? I've seen it on a few MOBO's but I don't really understand it, any explaination would be helpful.

Dual Lan is necessary for a couple of things, such as a server in which you could set up dual redundant connections to different ISP's (cable AND Dsl), or using a system as a router by having the ISP connection on one port then route all connections to the LAN on the second one.

iLL LoGiK

I helped a neighbor switch to a Router when I saw his set up using dual LAN cards in every computer to network. Get this 4 computers piggie backing each other so he could "share" Roadrunner. Whats cool is I got to keep 3 linksys lan cards that I sold on Ebay.

Since you're going with an AMD setup, I highly recommend the Asus A7V8X Deluxe motherboard. The new Nforce2 chipset is the best thing going right now for AMD CPU's, and it looks to stay like that for quite awhile. The Dual channel ddr400 memory controller is incredible. You could take that 2400 crank it up to a 166 FSB with 2 matching sticks of pc2700, and be amazed at the performance difference compared to a VIA chipset board.

iLL LoGiK
February 21st, 2003, 01:30 PM
Yeah I have been looking at the nForce2 boards they generally out perform the VIA chipsets plus many come with on board gForce gFx so that would rule out deciding on a gfx baord at least for the time being. Only problem is that I have heard bad things about ASUS and Epox several DOA stories circulating but at the same time they could just be cover ups for OC foul ups. Thanks for the food for thought still sitting on my TAX return waiting for some que to buy.

Although Asus HAD some QC problems about 8-9 months ago, they have been trouble free for the past 4 I've bought in the past 6 months. I use a P4PE Deluxe in my P4 rig, an A7N8X Deluxe in my AMD rig, and an older Asus VIA board in my file server. First time all of my machines used the same vendor's boards. They replaced an Abit KD-7, and an Asus P4B-533V. As for the DOA issues, usually its up to how the reseller packages it for shipment, but bad ones slip in every now and then for ALL of them.

Im very pleased with the Nforce2 chipset's stability, especially when overclocked.

I've decided on your testimony and others that my next investment will be an mobo w/ nForce chipset. It seems to be the chipset of choice now days with the AMD rigs.
