Well guys i have a choice of a free radeon 9700 pro or a Ti4600. I want some input on what u guys think i should go with. Even though the 9700 is faster, I've experienced in the past w/ them and they seem to have very flaky drivers. the 4600 seems to be more stable in the driver department. So what you guys think?

Yea i heard u gotta dl a lot of crap to get the 9700 running smoothly, but if it's free, grab it.

Stacy,

I change my vote, I would get the 9700 pro,
sell it on ebay(because it would sell for more)
and get the new fx NVidia card due to come out soon.
:D

OK BIG heres the big question i know that the 4600 has both 4x and 8x models which is it and if i remember correct the 9700 only comes 8x so if thats the case go with it

He only has a 4X board, unless he's going to upgrade that too...:P

doesn't matter if he only has a 4x board why are you gonna get the weaker of the 2 when you can just upgrade the board down the road instead of updating both

Good point there Reign

but considering he's running a 2200+ on a nice DDR400 board, it will be so far down the line to make it worthwile upgrading there will be 512MB Vid cards on the market w/ 3GHz GPU's & 16X AGP that will make both the 9700 and the 4600 look like a joke.

They are both good cards, and he's got a tough choice to make, but I do not think 4X vs. 8X AGP should be one of the considerations...

I still say go w/ the ATI though - Nvidia has always beat ATI in performance until now, and ATI has always beat Nvidia at image quality, and still is, so I'd go with the faster card w/ the best image quality, i.e. the 9700...w00t!

I read a review that said the NvideaFX didn't do quite as good as the 9700, and definately didn't do as well as it was supposed to do. But the whole driver issue does make a difference, since you have high speed internet downloading the drivers isn't that big a deal. But since I have dialup(w00t) I'm gonna go with the Nvidea myself.

the only thing w/ updated drivers from ATI, they fix one thing and break 4 other things, for example i have a ati8500 now. I update the drivers and they screwd up the OPENGL support for them. so all the games i play in opengl have to switch to D3D which sux0rs. Ok currently i'm going w/ the 4600. I've actually ordered it and also maybe have a 9700pro on its way too. If i receive both, i'll give you my reviews on both.

I haven't had that happen w/ my 8500 biggie...which version of the drivers are you running?

ok - mines from Jan 20 I think...

I did get my whole OpenGL subsystem screwed one time...been a few cards back though - like my GF2 and I wound up having to reinstall windows to get it back - couldn't play QIII...lol.

I was at COmp USA last night and was reading the specs on the 9700....I hate ATI but it looks like the better card.
