New Computer

I have been calling all over to find a new computer, I think I may have found one. I was just wanting some input from all of you.The computer has a 1.8GH prosesser, 256MBRam,40 GBHard drive, 17' color monitor, and this stuff that I have no idea of? S/KB/M, Mc/soft, intel pen. prosesser(4). Win XP.and 4087IM Ram Drive??? I am just trying to get some input, I am still new to the computer world.

1.8 Pentium 4 should be fine for a while to come...I'm runing a 1.7P4
256 RAM is OK- you'd be happier with at least 512 - can never ever have too much ram
40 gig drive is middle of the road now - you'll only run out of space if you get into downloading music or dealing with movie files...or lots and lots and lots and lots of counter stike maps...j/k

If you can get a 19in monitor for a little more, go for it, you'll enjoy it (CS looks AWESEOME at 1600X1200 and only a 19incher - or above - can do that)

You didn't mention video card - if you're going to be doing any gaming, you need to look at that, 'cause you may end up with a POC integrated graphics system that will lag out in CS...At least get a GF3 64MB or ATI 7500 64MB, Preferably (if you have the funds) a GF4 4200 (better value than the 4600) or an ATI 8500 128MB (better value than the 9700)...

I think AMD **WAS** the king in the gaming world when there was the Athlon T-Bird vs. Pentium III, BUT a lot of new games, incl. UT 2003, JKII, BF 1942 and The upcoming Doom are written using SSE2 optimized code which will only run optimally on the P4. Anything that is optimized for SSE2 will smoke on an Intel compared to AMD...I went from a 1.6 AMD 1900+ to a 1.7 P4 and it Benches faster, my OS runs snappier, everything is simply faster - all I did was change MOBO and chip...the only reason I did that was my AMD board went out, and since i had somebody to buy my 1900+, I decided to go ahead and make a change, just to see, and I'm glad I did. So, I think Intel is going to have the edge until Clawhammer comes out (which will have SSE2)...even diehard AMD sites like Tom's Hardware, ect., are favoring the Intel lately...But you know, an opinionis like a ..........lol

you know i have a amd 1900 and i have ran all them games you spoke of exept doom III with my geforce 4200, i will have to say i am very impressed with the way my system runs, never do i have any slowdown and my system benchmarks at 9600+ everytime i run 3dmark, now all i need is some more memory i only got 256ddr right now.

The computer I am looking at is a gateway 700x, The guy on the phone saidit was the best gameing computer that they offered, aside from buliding your own. The guy at gateway said to buy after market stuff. He also said it would be cheeper. What do you all think? The guy at gateway didnt mention a video card.

I keep hearing the word ping,is that how long it takes my computer to react to something?, and if it is how do I fix it? I am very new to all of this high tec. stuff.

You could custom build a sweet computer for about $650.
P4, 2gb, 512ram, GF4 4200, 40gbhd, etc...

I have cable, I still think it is my computer. When I get on line with cs, i can play fine when there is only a few people playing. but when everybody startes to play that is when i start to have trouble.

its your pc dude its old, use it for spare parts like your floppy and cdr, get a upgrade my friend.

I am i hate that these computers get old so fast, i just bought this one... one and a half years ago. Thanks for the advice Omega. I am going to try to get one real soon. Mark said he would build me one. I am going to try to take advantage of that offer.

I can build him a good one for about 700..thats my cost, maybe a lil less depending on parts in the next month.

I am also going to bounce up my dsl speed to five twelve, I think that will help out alot. What do you think?

Yeah that's the way the cookie crumbles. The software and the hardware mfg are into cahoots with each other to take us for all they can get from us and we like sheep keep on following to the slaughter..........
