Wow... thats a serious deal man.. I though for sure someone was killed until the article said the fire started I think an hour after the blow out... must have been one hell of a bang.

I've never been on a well that had a blowout, they're kinda rare to the degree that one happened. It was a mom n pop operation, the job i'm on now is a very major well, so many safety precautions out here, thats its virtually impossible for that to occur. I've seen the well spit a few times (spray drilling mud up out of the rotary table) and most of the time the drillers panic and shut the well in (basically seals the well without shearing off the drill pipe). If things get real bad, they shut the shear rams, cuts the drill pipe in half and completely seals the well off. I'm sure a news crew is not gonna look deep enough in to find that kind of detail on the well, maybe i'll read about it in a oilfield magazine somewhere. They have some video of it on another website, www.wafb.com i believe.
