Google announced this morning plans to roll out free IMAP access to all Gmail users over the next few days. The newly added feature makes it easier to sync inboxes across PCs and mobile devices.

We should note that, while "mobile devices" doesn't refer exclusively to the iPhone, Google did make a point of referring exclusively to said device in their news release, this morning. The demo video included on the Gmail What's New page also prominently feature's the Apple phone--we're just saying.

Gmail has had POP3 access for some time--as for the downfalls of adopting IMAP, our contributing security editor, Larry Seltzer, was quick to point out the fact that most PC security software won't scan inbound IMAP connections.

If you are an IMAP fan, however, rejoice, you should see the IMAP Access option popping up under the Settings menu over the next few days.
