One of my colleagues sent this to me via email, I'm sharing it with you because it is the truth about how things work. I've seen this myself in my brief dealings with upper management of the major oil companies.....Hopefully we can turn this thing around!

A Japanese company ( Toyota ) and an American company (General Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River .

Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat.

A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India .

The End.

Sad, but true.

Here's something else to think about:

Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US , claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

Toyota has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US .

The last quarter's results:

Toyota makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.

Ford folks are still scratching their heads.

OMG... you know, if only the "GREEDY" Executive's that make the dumb a$$ decisions likes the ones described in that parable would read it and get a fringing clue... maybe the country would be a little better off.

roger that!

I just don't buy the excuse that the car industry feeds us about not being able to compete and/or produce a vehicle at a reasonable cost. The simple fact is that Toyota found a way to get it done and the dumbasses at the top of GM and Ford are too ignorant to admit change is needed.

They are neither ignorant nor stupid. The consumer is the ignorant and stupid ones if they think it will change. An executives performance is always measured against the company's last year's numbers. If they can bring down costs and possibly raise sales, they are doing their jobs. They look better than last year. We call that "improvement". Who cares what they look like to the competition. Also upper management has lost all contact with their markets and who the consumer is that drives that market. They think they get all the right information from market analysis teams and consultants. As long as sales are looking good they get paid. If they do not look good, they fire a few hundred people, and they still get paid.

Also Toyota is now an American made vehicle, and I would buy a new one before Chevy, Dodge, or Ford.

True Rook, that Toyota is being made more and more in the U.S. becuase of import and export costs are rising and they can produce a more cost effective vehicle here than over seas. And yes domestic manufacturers are moving mroe and more abroad, BUT the simple truth as of now is that a Ford or Chevy is designed stronger than Toyota. Take a 2007 Tacoma, F-150, and GMC 1500 truck. Compare all 3 side by side on a purely design and constructed comparison and the F150 will walk circles aorund the other 2. Look at things like I-beam design and thickness. Taper bearing sizes, shaft sizes, and over all vehicle weight (The shear amount of metal used in the construction). Now I will admit that on the small car circuit Toyota may have the upper edge. And from a Quality standpoint Toyota is number one.

Also, Execs from our domestic companies make way too much money and are running the companies into the ground but I will still buy from an American company when I can when their desing is better. Now if Tacoma beefs up there axle sizes, bearing sizes and steel thickness guages and truely manufactures a vehicle of comparison for a better cost, I will buy from them.

But Andy, you're only talking about the truck design, which is the last refuge for the American companies. And now the imports have their sites set on that market too. Do you really think that the imports can't or won't beef up their designs if that's what it takes to compete in the market? I'm sure they would, but it probably won't come to that; people will buy the import trucks b/c 98% of them don't use the truck to capacity.

The imports control the rest of the market; they are the top dogs and we aren't really doing all that much to catch up. Or at least the products still are not equal. How many years does it take to catch up? I mean, we don't have the technology or is it we just don't care enough?

Another major problem with American run companies is that instead of cultivating their employees they will just fire them.
If someone doesn't get it right the first time around they are ejected, whereas the Japanese will allow them to try again until they succeed.

Andy you right about the Tacoma. The Tundra on the other hand compares very well to the full sizers.

i think when i look at trucks, the majority of the people buying the truck may nev er use the truck to its full capability. so while the information you give above about the f-150 being a better made truck that may be true for the small % of people who truely use there truck to it fullest limit maybe like a work truck etc. but i think the bigest portion of the market is probably the every day joe who buys a truck for the once in awhile carry a load or move something( hey glad i bought that truck years ago to move this furniture etc.)

But when you look at the gas milage the smaller toyota gets and the long life span ( engine problems Etc. ) the toyota wins out.the 2 toyotas trucks i had whent a hell of a lot longer and took a beeting compared to the chevy surburban i had.
I also think alot of the toyota whening out on sale comes from alot of there cars and all the hybreds they are making.(sure there are a few us made hybreds out there but not alot and cant think of them off the top of my head, so seems like there advertising for those modles isn't that great if when you think of gas milage and cost in gas you think of a japaneese made car yes.
well just rambling on now.I just get so dissapointed when i always end up trading my japaneese car to try a amaerican made.(suburban, ford escort, ford taurus, cadilac seville) just to have problems with every one of them. and wishing i would have stayed with toyota or honda. i think next i might give dodge a try haha.

I love my Tundra. I was skeptical at first but I'm REALLY glad I bought it. I feel as though I have a truck for years to come...I can't say I would feel the same if I owned another brand. Something about Toyota makes you feel like you've made a good investment.

Andy....you hit the nail directly on the head my friend!

Foreign companies do not pay their executives NEARLY as much as we do here....I think this is the major problem. The high salaries make people care less about what they are doing and more about the next big pay day. Ask the entire city of Detroit who is winning....or my home town of St. Catharines Ontario where we had 3 very large GM plants, now there is only about a half of plant....but I know that the people making these decisions to close up shop are not eating kraft dinner...pisses me off.

That's why I'm shooting for the top baby....maybe I can play a part in changing things.
