LA_MERC_Diesel

well it is a setting change that I would never do Biggs, unless you are sure you can. I have an uber leet mobo, that comes with a program that will "kick it up a set notch" when I went it to, then I can bring it back to normal with a simple reboot. run the test Biggs, what is your score and we can discuss further. It will not help your plane hax as your vid card is good enough as it is.

LA_MERC_Andyconda
January 22nd, 2006, 01:19 PM
Biggs, I wouldn't recommend doing so. You can easily fry a mobo and processor. I know. I've done it. I'm really just giving Robby crap cause I know he and I have exactly the same setup except I have SLI capability (But not utilizing it) I have a 3500+ process and he has a 3200+ but hes got the GTX vid card and I have the GT. So what this tells me is that a little better cpu is not as good as a little better vid card. I expected Robby to score better. The GTX card is better then the GT than the 3500 is to the 3200. Over clocking is not a good practice , AT ALL. I'm actually not going to do it. You tend to get skiddish after making a mobo glow and smoke.

Ok, I finally installed my two 7900GTX cards in SLI. I ran 3DMark 2006 and got a score of 5292. I'm thinking it should be higher as Mike got around 8000. Now I don't have a dual core processor but does that make that much of a difference.

LA_MERC_Andyconda
May 7th, 2006, 09:19 AM
Well I think I've narrowed my problem down to needing an updated BIOS. The latest one shows the support for 7900GTX cards BIOS version 3.A My problem is I don't know how to flash BIOS from a Windows XP 64bit system. Any ideas guys

AMD 2800 A Gigabyte 6800/128 and 1 gig of ram.

What was your Resolution set at?

LA_MERC_Diesel
May 8th, 2006, 01:09 PM
I would say my mobo helps with that score as I am able to run true 32 pci express, where you are still at 16,

I heard that the test 3d mark '06 runs optimal on 764 x 1024 try droping your screen resolution to that (note that did not help me out at all)

the only thing that helped me was OC'ing , which i ran a 8305 with out stressing anything.
My RAM is also really fast PC3500...maybe a difference maker?

do not worry to much about that score though it is just number and does not translate to real performance IMHO.

LA_MERC_Andyconda
May 8th, 2006, 01:43 PM
I actually read Mike that those points help but raw GPU is the most beneficial. I'm not as much upset with the score as I am the fact it will not tell me that SLI is enabled. I've upgraded my BIOS, nForce drivers, and vid drivers but its still not working. THe MSI tech website forums say it is probably a Windows 64 bit compatibility issue and I'm not waiting for them to come back and add it. Its just simpler to install windows XP Pro 32 bit and call it a day. I'm scoring low 5,000 even when I just run one card so I'm 100% sure SLI is not enabled yet.

LA_MERC_Andyconda
May 8th, 2006, 01:44 PM
On a great note one 7900GTX card runs battlefiled 2 in 1280 x 1024 rez with ultra high detail, AA, and everting turned on very beautifully. If I had to do it over again I would simply order one 7900GTX card. The difference between the 7800GT and one 7900GTX is amazing.

LA_MERC_Diesel
May 8th, 2006, 02:22 PM
yeah 512MB ram and all those pipes is a thing of beauty :)

I forgot you were on XP 64...when i got my computer they said SLI and XP64 are not very cooperative. In your Nvidia grphics display it should tell you that SLI is enabled, give me a call if you need any help.

andy, i was reading some, and i found this post. I remember you getting a sound card from spark a little while back. I dont know if this is it, but its worth looking at.

Actually I have found the source of the problem. It was the stupid Creative X-Fi Fatality driver which somehow installed incorrectly. It was using up 50% CPU just sitting idle.

After fixing this problem, I actually have gained 300 points in 3dMark2006.

X-FI owners beware!

LA_MERC_Andyconda
May 8th, 2006, 03:14 PM
Thanks Darren, I'll double check but thus far haven't had any issues with the Audify 4 I got from James. Its a very sweet sound card. I believe the problem is soley resposible by XP 64bit. I've had problems with numerous things not working right under it. I don't see much performance gain from it any way so I'm going to re-install with XP Pro 32 bit and go from there. Another reason is the MSI Live Update siftware that comes with my mobo that I haven't been able to use becuase of my 64 bit OS. Windows XP Pro 64 bit was a very stable and good OS its just that noghting is written to take advantage of it yet so unitl then 32 bit is the way to go.

LA_MERC_Onji
May 8th, 2006, 06:27 PM
rgr that. when i got my 64bit dual core processor, i tried win xp64, but there were so many things incompatible i swapped back to 32bit windows. yeah it was a pain, but i NEVER had problems again, things run how they are supposed to every time.

LA_MERC_Andyconda
May 15th, 2006, 12:04 PM
Ditto, XP 64 bit just isn't ready for the main stream. I'm having so much ease with 32 bit it makes me wonder why I stayed so long with 64 bit.

Wow, Got a chance to finally test the new rig. First out of the box score was 8155. I slightly over clocked and got 8293. I'm going to tweak some stuff and clean the system up but at just 3% over clock I easily get almost 8300. From what I read I could get close to 8500 with some tweaks and over clocking. The scary thing though guys is on some of the tests I still have low frame rate. WOW. Can you even get a better system than mine right now. I guess you need the new 8800 Nvidia to even make 2006 flinch, WOW.

Ok, beating a dead horse again, but I was wondering if anyone else is keeping tabs on their mark score. I just finished my upgrades and was wondering how much it helped. Here's the results:
Straight out of the gate standard setup I scored 9622. I then tried a little over clocking. At 3% OC I got 10,358. I then tried my hand at 5% OC and got 11,083. Ran very stable too. Core temps never got much above 40 C. One thing to note is I remeber Robby mentioning how hsi machine as good as it is still registered like 0 on the CPU test. Don't feel bad buddy. I have a dual core 5200X2 AM2 socket CPU and it still registered like 1 to 3 FPS on that test. WTF!, LOL. All in all the system screams. I love being able to really multi task and not have it flinch. Here's the Spec's

CPU = AMD Dual Core 5200+ X2 AM2 socket
MOBO = ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe (Wireless version)
RAM, CORSAIR extreme XMS PC6500 DDR2 2 GB

LOL, Yeah, its good, but no where near teh top Parker. Some of the new high end core duo intel processor rigs running SLi with 8800GTX cards are scoring in the 24,000+ range. Over double what mine is. I'm very pleased with my system and it may look like a corvete for some of you guys but remeber there are lamborgini's out there that make even my system look like an Atari system, LOL. For me I'm happy that I've got an AM2 socket mobo so when AMD catches back up with intel I'll have the socket mobo needed. Even though intel is better right now I'm still a hard core AMD fan. Never had any problems with them and they reigned supreme for some many years as far as price and performance I must remain, loyal.

Eventually, definately, but right now its wishy washy. I would stick with Xp for another 6 months or so or until Vista gets a service pack or something.

I will say gaming on Vista got a lot better with Nvidia's last driver release about a week ago...

All in all, I'm pretty satisifed. One thing I did notice about vista, it takes about a month after you load it for it to "settle" in and run the way it should - after that period (after super fetch and stuff kicks in) it runs a LOT smoother than XP.

When I found out I was going back to Geek Squad I loaded it so that I could learn it, inside and out, out of necessity. Now I'm glad I did.

Also, HL2 and Lost Coast run AWESOME in 64-bit mode.

Wetz, be careful updating the driver if you aren't having problems. I kept doing that with the new drivers and hosed up my system to the point I had to delete everything and reinstall widows and everything else a couple of weeks ago. The newer drivers did nothing if you were running XP, except kill BF2, wierd artifacts like seeing all the vehicles as yellow, random lock ups, got kickedd alot for high ping etc. On;y upgrade if you are having problems!

Current score 11,700, but I got another 8800 GTX for my birthday last week for SLI, just waiting on EVGA to ship me the second SLI bridge cable. Hoping for 14,000. We'll see, hopefully I'll post the results in a week.

Well, I posted over in my "New PC" thread, but decided to post here for continuity. I think it's kinda funny I'm nearly running w/ a SLI rig from 8 Months ago on a $100 overclocked card :-)

AMD Phenom II x4 940 @ 3.4GHz (Stock is 3.0GHz)
8GB DDR2-1066
ASUS M4A79 Deluxe Mobo (AMD 790FX NB/750 SB)
ASUS HD 4830 512MB Vid Card 700 GPU/1189 MEM/2378 effective (Stock is 575 GPU/1000 MEM/2000 effective)

13917 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 5310
SM 3.0 Score 6227
CPU Score 4648

*UPDATE*
@ 3.6GHz:
14037 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 5321
SM 3.0 Score 6222
CPU Score 4865

Looks like I'm finally GPU bound...so I'm probably going to just step back to 3.4GHz where I can run stock voltages - I'll feel safer that way.
