Greetings and all that other salutatory stuff,

I've recently joined the [H]orde, and you should too! What is the [H]orde, and why should you care? Both fine questions.

The [H]orde is a group of guys that frequent the hardocp forums that are all helping Stanford University work on the distributed computing project that they have going called "Folding". All told, there are almost 500 members in the [H]orde working toward the goal of finding solutions to many of the world's helath related issues. People all over the world are competing, trying to find solutions.

Why should you care?
What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease. In other words, we are trying to find why things happen to every day people. This could be you or someone you care about (some members of the [H]orde do it in memory of a lost loved one).

For more information about folding, go here (folding.stanford.edu)
For information about joining the [H]orde, go here (http://www.hardfolding.com/index.php?go=1) and be sure to put 33 in for the team (that's for the [H]orde) when you install the client.
And, when you do download the client and join the [H]orde, post here (http://hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=32) so that everyone can meet you.

Thanks for your time.

heh, I used to do that many years ago. wonder if my account and stats are still saved. I was part of the madonion crew. (well before it bacame Futuremark and started to really suck) I had ALOT of protiens folded. Had 3 PC's going 24x7 for about a year. well, madonion went down the toilet and after a few formats etc. I just never set it back up.

I did folding@home ages ago, and had actually forgotten about it. I had 2 G3 Mac's, a 1400 Athlon and a 1900 Athlon folding at my house and a P4 1.7 and a 2000 Athlon and a 667PIII folding at FlorencePC. And I'm gonna tell you what those Mac's could fold the hell out of some protien!

Hmmm - may get back into it, wonder how it would work on dial-up?

I thought you were talking about folding clothes at home. :)

Sounds like a worthy project, but, my laptop moves all over and probably wouldn't be much help.
