Good question...lol. My thinking is that at the time it was buried, long ago, it was a tad easier to get to it again. Perhaps the "owner(s)" died before making it back. Either that or maybe it is a bit more like a burial plot not unlike the pyramids... not ever meant for the contents to be taken. Then again, maybe the person who hid it was brilliant but not well off. He/she buried all of their worldly belongings, but it actually isn't anything anybody would care about, making the burial itself the most fascinating.
