I don't know that I can actually comprehend the magnitude of this....or the clean up/rescue/body recovery effort that this will entail.

Wow, the force of a 500 mph tsunami would be tremendous. It would make me want to move inland. :tank:

Just sat there and cried while I read it. I just can't fathom that. I think I don't want to either. I could NEVER imagine having my kids swept from my arms to die. Can't even say any more about this... It's too upsetting.

The sea was angry that day my friend...

Those pics were impressive. And for a proper visualization, it's not like a wave that crashes in, the energy wave travels at 500 mph, but pushes the water level up as it reaches shallow water, so the result (as you can see in the picture) is more a very rapid rise in the local water level and not a big crashing (or series of) wave. The shame is that the Pacific ocean has an extensive system designed to detect and warn of tsunamis, but the Indian Ocean countries have not adapted such a wide-reaching system.

and as it would benifit the people surrounding the Indian Ocean countries to instill such a system....it doesn't help the 30,000 that died this week. I wonder how many of these occur?

i read interesting article that mention how lots of the area in thiland was fishing areas, and before it came in the water had pulled back from the beach quickly enough to leave fish lying flapping on the sand in wich the young children of the fishermen ran out to grab these fish to help there familys only to be hit by the wave that followed. They didnt know it was a warning sign.
good news i heard was that austrailia and japan has gotten together to lend help with some type of early warning system for the future.

Yeah, we sent about $15 million worth of aid.

Sadly, the European UNION only sent $4 million?
