View Full Version : Ok, my computer has developed a new habit...

For some reason, just today, my computer has started going psycho on me while playing CS. Smoke nades take me down to like 1fps, where before today, it would take me to like 10fps or so...

Also, for about 2 seconds every 15 seconds or so, my screen will go all psychodelic, kida like how Yankee's old pc looked playing 16fighter, only a screenshot doesn't capture it - the ss's look normal.

Anybody have any Ideas? I'm running an MSI Geforce 4 MX420 SE with 64MB SDR.

no clue, unless the vid card is getting too hot for some reason, dont think the fan is going out do you? ask m@l about the revenge of the vid card fans....LOL!

ummm - this card doesn't even HAVE a fan...lol. I've thought about heat too..but since the card didn't have a fan, and is such a low end GPU, I kinda dismissed it...

Just put the question out there as two (or more) heads are better than one.

OK - I opened up the case and the vid card is quite cool to the touch - barely warm, so I don't think heat is the issue. I'm wondering if it could be something software related - trying to do some googling, but not turning up anything at all.

hmmm...

/Ducks head in case of retaliation/

How bout dust?

/Seriously/
Nah, jp dude, I had that happen before and it was video driver versions conflicting, but I doubt that is the problem in your case, unless you forgot to tell us you updates the drivers.

nah - haven't updated drivers since I loaded windows...and I've also just discovered, it only seems to be in CS - I can run 3dmark 2001 and 2003 all the way through with no artifacts...
so, I'm just gonna try re-installing, I'm thinking maybe a .wad file or something has become corrupt....

Virus or spyware maybe? Nowadays, when a computer just messes up, these things are sometimes to blame.

nah, no virus or spyware - i AM a PC Tech...

Anyway - turns out a re-install of Steam fixed the psychodelic thingie, but I'm still getting single digit fps during somke grenades...not sure of a setting I changed, but it may have something to do w/ that. I can live w/ the slow smokes, just so happy the psychodelic stuff stopped!

Max, what resolution do you play at?

One of my computers has a 9600XT overclocked with water and it gets really bogged down at 1600x1200 when it gets in really heavy particles (smoke nade.)

was at 1024x768...now at 800x600 to help w/ the nades...not working though, so I'm gonna go back to 1024.

Try switching from D3D to Open GL or vice versa depending on which one you are currently using. I had weird things happen to me in one but the other worked fine. You can also limit the damage done by smoke grens by tweaking their properties in the options menu.
