pci express is the future, get a card that you can upgrade with later on.

nvidia and ati are at a close race. nvidia has Shader 3.0 which is going to be introduced in upcoming games so it has that advantage over ati.

Look at the nvidia 6600 GT and the ATI X700 pro

yeah both are great choices, it is a tough time right now C, I think the next gen of cards will be way better than the current "top of the line" cards are, as pci express will open up lots of possibilities.

For now I went FX5900 8X 128 MB 256 bit agp for only 170. Will spend the big bucks on a exteme high end vid card after we buy a house. I think I will definately be happy with the card now as I'm coming from a GeForce 4 Ti4200. Also the AMD Athlon 64 bit 3000+ processor and 3200 speed ram and new mobo will really help too. I have had experience with both ATI and Nvidia. Personaly I'm an Nvidia man, but the argument between the 2 is like arguing Ford vs. Chevy. Both damn good just depends on the market at the time you buy and your personel prefrence. But we all know Ford is better, hehehehe. I still laugh Brandon everytime I read your sig, damn that was funny.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/counterstrike-source_6.html shows a pretty good comparison of various cards for cs:source which is using the same engine, should be decent indicator of each card's performance.

Stop flaming about NVidia and ATI folks. He asked the BEST card for HL2, it's going to be x800XTPE.

I personally love ATI's. If your lookin for one budget, id recomend the 9800 pro its at around 200 dollars which is a steal

So...I'm guessing my GeForce MX 420SE won't play HL2 :)

Are you going to be overclocking?
How many slots do you have on your mobo?
Do you like mustard on your sandwiches?
DDR or SDRAM?
Are you going to be using the ram you currently have along with the new ram?

If I remember correctly, eob has a dell demension 8250 but I'm not sure if he has the 400mhz or 533mhz. They made both in the 8250 so we would need to know that first off.

If you want a nice card right now, get a 6800GT. If you want the best card for HL2, get x800XTPE :)

Oh yea, EOB, you're going to need to upgrade BAD, that CPU is going to limit any newage card like (insert analogy here.)

brandon - didn't your dell take RAMBUS, or was that just the older one that wifey poo uses now?

yea max wife takes uses that one now.. she uses sdram, i got ddr. My pc going to be fine for the games I play, nexus and counter-strike. just going wait for the agp version of the 6600gt, and get some ram. I'ma open my pc up tomorrow and I am hoping I have a 256 chip and not 2 128's. Only have 2 slots for ram.

Acid... sigh...

Yes, there is a x800XTPE, it is the x800XT Platinum Edition. Do you not research? SIGH on you. Check this out. This is a 6800Ultra vs a x800XTPE. Notice how the ATI card leads with high AA/AF :)
