Um...which version of windows are you running?

If you are using WindowsXP or 2000, open Task Manager, click on the Processes tab and click on the column heading Mem Usage to sort the list by most memory used. Here you can look at what processes are using the most memory, research what those processes are and act accordingly. (like ending the task, stopping services, uninstalling the software that is using the most memory, or upgrading the memory in your computer.) If you have a lot of programs in your system tray, you may need to go through and configure them to not start up with Windows.

I have the rest set to manual...

Also I:
Turn Off Indexing

Open My Computer > right click on each drive and choose Properties > under the General tab, uncheck the box that says Allow the Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching > a window will pop up, make sure the box is checked that says Apply change to (drive letter):\, subfolders and files and click OK. Windows will apply the changes, click OK. Once you have done all the drives I recommend you reboot.

Right click on My Computer again, and go to Properties:
Click on the Advanced tab > check both boxes that say "Programs" Under the Virtual memory section you should make adjustments here if your system can handle it. Click Change here
If you have multiple Partitions, click your OS partition and set the swapfile size to "No Swap File" and put a Swap file the size of 2.5x your Ram (2048MB max)for both min and max on another partition, PREFERABLY on a separate drive!

Add these Key's to the registry (or modify the existing ones to represent these settings):

Set CPU Priority

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\PriorityControl]
"Win32PrioritySeparation"=dword:00000026

Disable 8.3 Names

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem]
"NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation"=dword:00000001

These allow you to end tasks faster, shut down faster and speed up the menu display.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"ForegroundLockTimeout"=dword:00000000
"HungAppTimeout"="4000"
"MenuShowDelay"="200"
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="5000"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="5000"

If you see system tray, leave it checked, other that that, nothing in the list is necessary for windows to function.
