Please Help with Steam Problem!!!!

New comp, installed steam and it won't connect. Says either internet problem or steam server problem. Internet is working fine and other comp is on steam network. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know how to fix it?? I email steam the other day but no response. Please Help!!!
