I was wondering if any of you know what a ball-park figure would be to get central air replaced? Hopefully i just need the outside unit replaced but I'm having a home depot guy come out and give an estimate on Friday. Anyone with knowledge in this area, please chime in..thanks in advance.

my friends had the inside unit and some duct work done for around $1400-$1500 last week

Last year, about this time, I replaced the outside unit, inside unit, new duct work and installed for $3200.

those prices all seem pretty norm. if you want to shop around for price comparisons on the parts you need replaced, you might want to use a largely unknown tool that some are hailing "The Internet" yet another faction calls it the "world wide web"
there you can do reconnaissance on companies like Home depot, Lowes, Sears, and other well known traders of A/C units.

yeah, I couldn't find any actual 'pricing' in my brief internet/world wide web search. I am having home depot come by to give estimate, I just wanted to see if anyone has recently encountered this.....omg $3500...so much for my vid card and RAM. :(

I'm thinking about tackling some of the installation myself to save money, or at least buying the equipment myself and have a professional install it.

carefull. many places will provide you with no warrenty at all if they either don't install it, or it is not equipment purchased from them. and $3500 would be to repolace everything. ouside unit, inside unit and some duct work. if you only need outside unit, expect to pay around $1000 - 1500 (labor included) if you get a top name unit. you can get a cheap piece of crap that will work for about 2-3 years installed for around $600.

i just had a 3 ton heat pump installed last nov. and it cast me about $3200.00. one word of advice, stay away from temp star systems. i bought a ten year warranty with it for about $300.00 over the 3200, and in one year i have had them back out no less than 4 times, and the factory warr aint even out yet. go with a trane unit if you can. i still have a trane 2 ton unit thats about 30 years old, and never had anythng but minor problems with it.

it's the piece of crap that has me in this position now.

I just had to buy an outside unit 2 weeks ago and it was only $813.20 for a 2 1/2 ton. They came out here and hooked it up and everything. It came with one year warranty on labor and 5 year warranty on all parts. It's the same kind of unit we had in here before (I think the name of it is a Gibson don't know if thats a cheap one or not) But hey I'm cold now!

Just bought a house and the guy had new stuff put in right before we moved.

TempStar High Efficiency TCA430 with 3 ton cooling coil
TempStar 2 Stage Heater

Duct work modification and 2200 space guard air cleaner.

$4500...

I have no idea what the above listed crap is, but thats what the invoice reads and it sounds cool. I keep the house at 72-73 degrees all the time and electric bill is fairly low. 1600sq ft house and runs me $120/month right now and $60-$70 during the winter. So apparently it's doing it's job.

2800 sq ft house with it at 70-71 all the time means $300 electric bill in the summer :(

OMFG.. Thats almost my truck note..

Course if have a house that big then $300 probably is expected I take it... I moved into this house from a 800ish sq foot apartment that was running me around $200/month electric. So I'm real happy here :)

I wanna job like your Diesel..
I pay my house note, truck note, bills, and then try to figure out how much I can spend on groceries.. hehe

Unless I can line up side work that is, then it's all good..
Business has been pretty decent lately..

yeah, i pay bills (don't have a car note) but still not enough for the filling the fridge...now add on 3800 for A/C. doh!

btw that is for a Trane---inside & out. 4.5 ton unit.
